Unveiling the Unknown
The reason behind spiritual practices or subconscious work like meditation, dreamwork, breathwork, hypnosis, and psychedelic therapy is to reach into our unconscious selves to uncover parts of ourselves that are not readily accessible in our everyday beta wave brain functions. If you don’t know what you are looking for, how can you find it?
These practices allow our underlying thoughts, feelings, and past experiences to naturally come into our conscious attention. Once we can observe these energies consciously, we can bring loving attention to them and work through the struggles that they may bring to our lives. This is the same type of concept that conscious inner work involves, though through different methods. We can have dialogues with ourselves to identify the feelings that fuel the beliefs of our shadow self, and we can engage in philosophical and epistemological debates with others to clarify to ourselves and others why we believe what we believe and where that belief comes from.
Utilizing a counselor, therapist, or close friend to engage in healthy debates to deep dive into the foundation of our belief systems can be a great way to open the door to unveiling the unknown within ourselves when we aren’t used to asking ourselves tough questions about our own deep seated characteristics. Keep in mind these dialogues can be difficult to engage in for those who struggle with perfectionism, self-worth, and self-importance as when a belief is challenged it may be taken personally.
Reaffirming that there is no judgement, using loving language, and acknowledging the coming forth of new information as valid helps us feel accepted and safe throughout this potentially ego-shattering work. Sometimes small steps are more effective than large ones in this realm, as planting a small seed of self-questioning in a loving way will always have a better outcome than being forced to explain entire constructs that are overwhelming and difficult to identify, communicate, and navigate without experience.
